I would like to let everyone know about a big problem with parvo in animal shelter. we did what we thought was the right thing and adopted a puppy from an animal shelter in our area. that puppy started to show signs of parvo within 24 hours. we ended up spending $1000 dollar to get her well,not to mention the sadness and worry.  the shelter where we adopted her told us to bring her back and they would DISPOSE of her for us. i let them know that in my world animal are NOT  disposable. not to mention that our house is contaminated and we can not have new dogs in the house for at least 6 months. this same shelter has adopted out at least 8 other dogs with parvo that we know about.all the puppies in our puppy's litter died from it.please please be very careful when adopting dogs from shelters.

please remember an animal shelter cannot help passing things around.  no matter how careful they are.  it is like when a child goes to school or we go to the mall.  whatever disease comes in with an animal is spread to other.  parvo is very contageous.  there is no way around that.  the animals in shelters are there because of the disregard for animals.  whether it is breeding, moving or just doesn't want.  those animals are desperate for homes.  they will die without the help of a wonderful person like you.  please help to save these animals.  they need our help.  spaying and neutering would reduce the animals in shelters, therefore reduce the chance of a parvo puppy being adopted.  the shelters cannot know that a dog will come down with parvo after leaving there. 

Are their signs that you can look for of Parvo?  My boss just adopted a dog from a local shelter and it has Parvo but thank God, she is going to live, she has been in the hospital for over a week hooked up to an IV :( 

We learned the hard way too! Our Wire Fox Terrier came from a breeder. I took him for his Parvo vax and he was fine for a while, but came down with Parvo he contacted at the Vet's office. We nursed him through at home and saved him. It might have been a lighter case the vet said because he had the vax. THe vet told us never to put apuppy down outside of home, never take him in public such as parks or lawns, until he is vaccinated and it has time to take effect. Now we keep our puppies inside or in the car except our own backyard until they are big enough for shots. I hope your boss' dog survives too. Parvo is a terrible death where they dehydrate to the point of failure. Our dog happened to love tea with milk and sugar and that pulled him through, although tea is not reccommeded for dogs, you can't tell us it was not worth it. The vet didn't think he was going to make it, but Thank Heavens, he did and now he is 14 years old! JoEllen in Central California where Parvo never dies!

 It depends on what stage is the parvo.I had several bad experience with this kind of illness,my dog  has gave birth many times,and 90% of it is not successful because of parvo.Once a single puppy is infected,consider it as everybody.My point is parvo is one of the sensitive and deadliest disease i've encountered.

the shelter i  got the dog from told us to BRING HER BACK FOR DISPOSAL WITH HER  7  BROTHERS AND SISTERS. They had to know they had a problem. i don't buy that they can't make sure the dogs are i good health before adopttion.

honestly that is a sad story..
