    Training

I have a 5 month old female Toy Fox Terrier named BELLE, you just wind her up and let her go.  She is very playful and has lots of engery.  I am in the process of training her and she is doing well.  She has learned to sit, lie down, and learning to leave it.  She does pretty well on walking on a leash until she see  another dog, then she wants to take off.  She still does not come when called, she thinks we are playing with her when we call her, so she comes so far and runs.  She is very loveable and has a personality of her own.

For being only 5 months, it sounds like Belle is doing very well !  I have 6 ( yes, count 'em 6 rat terriers) and have found that tiny pieces of cooked chicken works wonders in getting them to come right to me when called.  I just put the chicken in a ziplock bag and keep it with me while working with them. Eventually you won't need it any more. :-)

Oh I guess BELLE is a fast learner...I have a 2 months old puppy name Brian...And I'm starting to teach him some dicipline that he need to do just like your dog BELLE...but I guess he is too young for this but stating training in a young age is much better than when they are old...

    Re: Training

I have been told that about 6 months, on average, is the time for training discipline tactics.  But I find cage training from the time you bring them hoe is the best for training to do their business outside.  If you feed them in the cage most pets won't poop where they eat and will bark when thy need to go.

    Thought this could help.

    Re: Training

It sounds like Belle is doing great. I just got a new puppy two weeks ago he is three months. This is my first dog so i am learning still as well. My puppy is a Boston Terrier named Murphy. He knows sit, down, paw, and he is learing to leave it. I have read a little about training and in what i've read and in my expierience use a treat and act like you are playing a game with them, dont say the word come, use a stern voice, or call a dog to disipline them. This will cause them to associate coming with being disiplined and they will become fearful. So act like you are playing a game use a treat go in a different room in your house from the dog and say things like come and find me, where am i, i have a cookie/treat. I read this in an AKC book and it works! Plus it is alot of fun. Also when you are in a sticky situation where the dog gets loose it will pay off to teach the dog this way. This way he will not think he/she will get punished for running away when he/she comes back. Eventually you won't have to use treats either. I am a strong believer in praise when the dog does well. Kindness but Sterness. Also i am new to this anyone have a suggestion about nipping andc biteing.-Danielle
