    Cage Training

Does anyone know if cage training really works?  I have a new Golden Retreiver and was told to cage train him but it sounds a bit unfair to the dog.  Any response will help.

    Thank you,

Actually it is called crate-training, and it works using a canine's natural desire to go into a den. Here is a good link for crate training, it should not be used as a form of punishment....

Yes, crate training really works. I just got a Shetland Sheepdog puppy and she absoulutley loves her crate. I use to be so against crate traing because I also thought is was unfair and cruel but she loves her crate she will go in it without me telling her. I highly recommend crate training

Yes, my dog loves his cage as well. It is a nice safe place for him to retreat to when things get a little hectic around the house.

It dose work .I no i felt bad when i did it but it teaches the dog you are in charge and the thing about caging them when there tierd they will go lay right down in there cage no problem. it is a very good idea that you do that so when your not home they wont chew all your stuff up and wont make a mess. i no i lernd the hard way.lol like if youwere eating at the table and he or she beged you tell them to kennal up and they will do it till your donw eating it seemed to me they listen more when you cage train them thats my own opinon i hope i was a help if you have any more question just ask.

My neighbor cage trains her two dogs and it works if you practice training at a certain time every day your dog will learn a pattern and also if you reward your dog he/her will learn that it will recieve a goody for doing a good job.

I have used crate-training with my dogs for the past 10 years.  If you do it correctly, it is wonderful.  My first chihuahua was a rescue (he was 7 months old) we started crate training him.  At night we would say, "bedtime" and he would go into the crate all by himself.  When he isn't there during the night, keep the door open so he can come and go as he pleases.

    Good luck!

My 3 year old Beagle also loves his crate.  He only goes in there while we're not home.  At first we put him in there because he got into a lot of stuff and chewed it up.  But now it's a habit he apparently likes, since when he sees us getting ready to leave for work/school in the morning, he goes in there on his own.

Our house is really small, so we have his crate in the living room.  We put a lightweight piece of wood on top of it and covered it with a blanket, except for the front, and use it as an end table next to the couch.

We also have a collapsable travel crate that he prefers for long car trips, and that's also what he sleeps in while we're camping or visiting family.

And we broke him of chewing on shoes and such by getting him rawhide chews, which he loves.
