We have been raising/taming  a feral kitten and worry about her getting out again before she is totally tame so the first thing we did was to be sure to get her a tag - We have spayed  and gotten shots for two of the five in the feral family she came from but undortunately two of the older cats had to be put to sleep because of feline aides - it is such a problem - I wish more people would take care of the feral cats in the neighborhoods - If they wont catch them then call the local association who will come and catch them and see that they are given their shots and neutered - If you feed them however, then they are your responsibility!!

Feral cats should not be taken to animal control pounds and shelters.
Feral cats’ needs are not met by the current animal control and shelter system. Feral cats live outside, but are killed in shelters. Even no-kill shelters are not able to place feral cats in homes.

Trap-Neuter-Return does work.
No more kittens. Their numbers gradually go down and their lives are improved. The behaviors and stresses associated with mating, such as yowling or fighting, stop. The cats are also vaccinated. This program creates a safety net for both the cats and the community.

 There must be some association who handles this kind of matter.Feral cats are not safe to have.

How do you know feral cats are unsafe? I have 3 that came to use by a feral mom and then she left the kittens at our house where we continue to feed them. They may not allow us to pick them up, but we can pet them and they come by the name we gave them. We were able to trap and spay the female.... however we do not have the money to fix the 2 others.

There are some associations that help, but they can only do so much. When I had trapped my female, they could not help me to get her spayed and out of pocket was 90 bucks that I was not expecting to shell over since I was told they would help me.

If I did not want them here or the others, I would just have to stop feeding them. Why end a life to a poor kitty that had no choice? They are not an issue to us.

(cont)  amazed by how little it takes to tame a farel cat... some love, time and a checkup is all you need to trap one, 9 times out of 10 they are disease free and most areas do have associations that will give them shots/neuter for free or reduced costs... then all you need to do is show them you care and they'll love you forever.
