Personalized vs. Lost Pet Recovery Tags

    Hi everyone,

I have a one year old or so Border Collie that was found without a collar or tag at a remote campground a while ago.  While, judging from his behavior, he was abandoned rather than just lost, I want the best way for him to be found in the event he wanders off.  I would think the Personalized tag would be the best way for someone to get a hold of me in the event he wanders off.  But I see this site offers the Lost Pet Recovery tag as well.  Which do you feel would be most instrumental in getting him back in the event he wanders and why?

I don't think he's going anywhere soon, though!  He has too much fun teasing the kitten....lol.

My preference is for a microchip; in case of lost collar/harness and a tag with my name, address, home and cell phone numbers. I put "REWARD4RETURN" in place of the pets name on the tag. I have also known people who camp/travel with their pets to put an additional luggage type tag on their pets collar with the name of the campground/resort and their site number. This is easily changed  as needed  for each new stopping place. As my Aussie transplant sister would say, "Good on ya" for rescuing the B.C.!!

Microchips are okay but nothing beats a ppet tag since you need a reader to get the info from a chip.  Microchips should be 2nd and tags should be there first and foremost since most people, not all,  would not take the pet to a Humane Society or a veterinarian to see if they have the right scanner if there is a chip there at all.

    Tags rule,  chips 2nd.

My puppy has a personal id and a microchip. I would definitely recommend both. I would recommend getting a personal tag over the microchip if you were only going to get one because the tag you can see, and if the person doesn't take him to the vet with the proper scanner you would never know the pet had one.I prefer the personal id the reason being i would want the person who found him to call me personally, I have mine and my fiance's cell phone numbers on his tag.  Also another option i don't have, but is also good, is tattooing. You can tattoo almost anything including your phone number. The good thing about a tattoo is it's perminent and you can see it, a tag you can remove. This really deters professional dog thieves from taking your dog or any pet. I am also thinking of getting the tattoo as a third percaution, you can never be too safe when it comes to your pet in my eyes because you never know.

I think the Lost Pet Recovery Tag is a better tag then a personalized tag since even if you put your cell phone on it it may be turned off and the Lost Pet recovery tag has 24/7 live operator support with several contact numbers and medical info if necessary.  Tattoos are good but not everyone would look for it and a tag is the best thing to have as it is easily seen and a chip is a good 2nd backup.

     That's my opinion.

This site also offers Personalized Collars&Leashes along with the Recovery Tags so why not both?? My dogs are microchipped, but unless the dog is brought to the vet, no one knows he has one, and he has a collar with his name and my phone# on it, and he has the lost recovery tag on it. He did get lost once and I didn't answer the number on his collar so when they called the number on the recovery tag, they called my sister who is listed as my nearest relative on the tag so she went and picked him up. I personally believe you should have the personalized collar AND the lost recovery tag. They have helped us many times with getting our "wandering babies" back!!!

I am happy that this tag wored for you when your pet was lost.  I have used them for years and always tell my friends this is the best tag to have in the event a pet is lost since it offers several ways to help the pet get reunited with their owner.

     Thanks for the update.

Great minds think alike....I adopted my Cocker Spaniel puppy from the humane society (they closed down a puppy mill). All dogs, cats and pups all get microchipped before being adopted out here at our shelter. I purchased the lost pet recovery tag...only because if my phone number changes or address changes, it can be updated. And you can also have a relative or friend listed. With the regular tags, you have to replace it . And if there is an accident, your vet's info is available also. . I took my lost pet recovery tag to my jeweler and had them engrave on the back "REWARD FOR SAFE RETURN" Call for info.
